Get connected.
Get involved.

Stat Alliance officers and members collect opportunities for students to get more involved with statistics through internships, fellowships, conferences, summer and research programs, and volunteer opportunities.  We share these opportunities with our community here and try to update this list regularly.

Another Summer Opportunity- REU!

2/8/2018

Research opportunities for talented undergraduate students of statistics are available this summer.
Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) programs are aimed at students who are interested in exploring advanced mathematical and statistical techniques to “real-world” problems. Participants collaborate with researchers on data analysis in a variety of disciplines ranging from astronomy to epidemiology.
The American Statistical Association REU programs are 10 weeks and hosted at Colorado State University, Morgan State University, and The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

PeerJ Collection and Upcoming Seminars

9/10/2017

Hello everyone! We just wanted to let you know of an opportunity to attend a seminar being hosted on campus by Megan Hicks on September 25th from 4 to 5 pm in Weber 237.

Also, a collection of preprint articles were recently released on a variety of statistics subjects, which you can find here. They're all articles that aid in the transferring knowledge in industry and academia, and different ways you can incorporate programs into R or vice versa. Check them out!

Summer programs: Data science for social good

2/8/2017

Statisticians are involved in projects that help people

Statisticians are increasingly becoming involved in data science and data analysis projects with organizations that address various "social good" causes, including public health and safety, social justice, criminal justice, and environmental issues.

We've compiled a list of summer programs that involve statistics students with this work.  The deadlines for these programs are coming up soon, so be sure to take a look at these soon if you're interested!  These programs usually offer participants stipends that pay for room, board, and travel expenses.  Stat Alliance may also be able to help find CSU participants additional funds if needed.

Searching for jobs is hard, but this is a good way to see who is hiring statisticians and to meet people you could be working with.  This could help you personalize your job application or avoid applying to a job you're not going to enjoy.

Data science bowl 2017

2/8/2017

Data analysis project/competition

Kaggle data analysis competition; entries due by 12 April 2017.
https://www.kaggle.com/c/data-science-bowl-2017#description

What is Kaggle?

Kaggle lets businesses, governments, and organizations share their data with the public and ask for help answering real questions.  People organize into teams and submit answers.  Oftentimes, the team with the best answer receives (sometimes quite large) cash prizes.

Data science bowl

The 2017 Data science bowl asks people to help develop algorithms that search for cancerous lesions in high-resolution lung scans.  The link above has more details about the project, competition rules, etc.  Various prizes for this competition range between $5,000 and $500,000.

Graybill conference at CSU

2/8/2017

Conference dates

6/5-7/17 at Colorado State University

Overview

(Copied from the CO-WY chapter of the ASA's conference announcement)

Statistical genomics and genetics have been growing remarkably fast and covering more and more topics in both fields. They are now essential parts of modern biological and medical research as well as important research topics within statistics. Exposure to and understanding of the motivating problems, newly-developed models and methods, and working protocols are extremely useful for researchers in the quantitative sciences, including bioinformatics, computer science and statistics. The goal of the conference is to provide an opportunity for quantitative scientists and practitioners in the biological sciences to generate and share ideas for new creative research in statistics and genomics or genetics; to exchange knowledge on frontier statistical methodologies for problems rising from genomics and genetics;  to stimulate professional networking opportunities; and to provide young researchers with exposure for their work.

Unlock Unstructured Social Media Data in Marketing

2/8/2017

Webinar

4 p.m. on 3/28/17. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zf9ViSIOHfE

Abstract

Social media have created a reverberating "echoverse" for brand communication, forming complex feedback loops between the "universe" of corporate communications, news media, and user-generated social media. Prof. William Rand will talk about using computational linguistics techniques to analyze longitudinal unstructured data to understand these feedback loops. He will also talk about building agent-based decision support systems for word-of-mouth programs. It will be online and you can watch the live broadcasting on YouTube or watch the recorded video later

Putting Big Data & Analytics to Work!

2/8/2017

Webinar

4 p.m. on 2/28/17.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91o80BisGHQ

Abstract

Companies are being flooded with tsunamis of data collected in a multichannel business environment, leaving an untapped potential for analytics to better understand, manage and strategically exploit the complex dynamics of customer behavior. In this webinar, we will start by providing a bird’s eye overview of the analytics process model and then illustrate how to fully unleash its power in some example settings. We will review data as the key ingredient of any analytical model and discuss how to measure its quality. We will zoom into the key requirements of good analytical models (e.g. statistical validity, interpretability, operational efficiency, regulatory compliance etc.) and discuss emerging applications. The webinar will provide a mix of both theoretical and technical insights, as well as practical implementation details. The presenter will also extensively report on his recent research insights about the topic. Various real-life case studies and examples will be used for further clarification.
